Vegetable prices rise by 20% as winter growing season ends

The prices of some vegetables have risen over the past days by approximately 20 percent, an increase which traders attributed to the drop in agricultural produce in between seasons.

The price of tomatoes ranged between LE4 and LE5 in different districts and that of potatoes between LE3 and LE3.5. The prices of other vegetables, meanwhile, remained stable, including Jew's mallow and garlic.

Hazem al-Naguib, a greengrocer, said the increases are due to the end of the winter season and the beginning of the summer season, which leads to a drop in supply and therefore a rise in prices.

He added that he expects prices to drop again over the coming 10 days as summer vegetables appear on the market.

Vegetables grown in Daqahliya, Beheira, Ismailia and Lower Egyptian governorates will be supplied to the market, which should help cut prices, he said.
