A number of exporters called for a meeting by the Agriculture Export Council to discuss the infection of white beans by the acanthoscelides obtectus, known as bean weevil.
Exporters said that importers in Algeria, Turkey and the European Union have complained of bean weevil in stocks of white beans from Egypt. The exporters called for suspending the export of beans for six months until a solution is found to maintain the reputation of Egyptian products.
Head of the Legumes Department at the Agriculture Export Council Elbasha Idris said the Agriculture Ministry has detected lately bean weevil in white beans.
Meanwhile, Head of the Agriculture Export Council Ali Eissa said the council has not received complaints from EU importers. Executive Director of the Council Hani Hussein said all shipments are inspected and were clear of bean weevil before being exported.
