The Cabinet has agreed on Thursday to amend the Political Rights Law No. 73 of 1956 so as to prevent detainees pending investigation and criminal prisoners from running for president, a senior government official told Al-Masry Al-Youm.
The Cabinet submitted the amendments to the State Council fore review before being approved by the interim president, the official added.
The new amendments prevent leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood on remand, as well as toppled President Mohamed Morsy from running the presidential race, the official said. It would also apply to former President Hosni Mubarak, who is being tried on criminal charges.
