Constitutional Committee Chairman Amr Moussa said that the stability of the country is contingent upon the approval of the Constitution at a public conference organized by the Alexandrian Chamber of Commerce on Sunday.
“Egypt will never go backwards,” Moussa said, referring to the Morsy and Mubarak eras. “The new Constitution is the first step on the road to the stability that will achieve the goals of the revolution.”
The conference turned into a celebration supporting Defense Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi for president.
The approval of the newly amended Constitution is the first and most challenging step on the road to Egypt forming a representative democracy, after which parliamentary and presidential elections will be held.
Egypt set out on the political roadmap after the ouster of the country's first democratically-elected president, Mohamed Morsy. His supporters have vowed to block the referendum, which would further legitimize the ouster.
