Prosecutor General Hisham Barakat has referred charges against Bassem Youssef, presenter of CBC's hugely popular show El-Bernameg, to the Cairo Appeal Prosecution for investigation.
Youssef is charged with insulting the president and Egypt's defense minister, General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
The popular Egyptian satirist made his return to the small screen after a four-month hiatus, sparking fierce debate and controversy after broadcast on Friday.
At one point, Youssef insinuated that Sisi was the man really in control of the country, not interim President Adly Mansour.
