Prosecutors investigate Brotherhood assassination claims

Prosecutors are investigating a claim filed against Muslim Brotherhood leaders accusing them of planning the assassination of Major General Ahmed Wasfy, the commander of the Second Field Army, while he visited Sinai last week.

Essam al-Erian and Mohamed al-Beltagy and Hamas figures have been implicated in the allegations.

The claim named both Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh and political bureau chief Khaled Meshaal as responsible for inciting terrorist groups in Sinai to assassinate Wasfy.

Military spokesperson Ahmed Mohamed Ali said Wasfy had been subjected to an assassination attempt in Sheikh Zuwayed after a driver opened fire on the Egyptian army chief's convoy as he passed.

Security forces accompanying Wasfy responded to the attac and stopped the car, where a wounded child was found.

The child was transferred to Arish Public Hospital but died on arrival.
