Abul Gheit leads delegation to UN meeting

Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Abul Gheit will lead an Egyptian delegation to the 65th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week, the ministry announced yesterday.

Hossam Zaki, the ministry’s official spokesperson, said Abul Gheit will deliver statements as Egyptian foreign minister  and as the current head of the Non-Alignment Movement (NAM) before the UN General Assembly. Abul Gheit will also participate at the ministerial meeting for Alliance of Civilizations.

The Presidential Summit for Implementing the Millennium Development Goals and the Presidential Summit for Celebrating the International Year of Biodiversity will top the session's agenda.

In a press release issued yesterday, Zaki said Abul Gheit will participate in other high-level meetings, including two meetings called by the UN secretary general. The first will focus on the current situation in Sudan and its future. Representatives from regional and international organizations, as well as countries with Sudanese interests, will attend. The second meeting will focus on the activation of resolutions made by the Conference on Disarmament (CD) and multilateral disarmament diplomacy.

Abul Gheit will also be attending the Arab League Council meeting for coordination on issues included within the Arab League General Assembly agenda.

He will also be present at the foreign ministers meeting of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) for coordination among general assembly member states. This meeting gained importance in light of Egypt taking over the presidency of the OIC in March.
