6 April movement demands prison transfer for jailed colleague

Dozens of members of the 6 April opposition movement staged a protest on Wednesday in downtown Cairo to demand the transfer of colleague Ahmad Abu Duma from Al-Qatta Prison to the Damanhur Prison, the latter of which is located closer to his family’s home.

Abu Duma was sentenced to three months in prison for assaulting two police officers during anti-government protests held in early May.

The event represented the movement’s second demonstration this week to demand that Doma either be transferred to a prison located in the Al-Baheira Governorate or be released.

According to security sources, Abu Duma was taken to Al-Qatta Prison after having been sentenced to six months in jail by the Qasr Al-Nile Misdemeanors Court. His sentence was later reduced to three months, however, after he appealed the sentence.

The same sources pointed out that Abu Duma had been taken to Al-Qatta because his official place of residence is in the Giza Governorate, and that prison regulations stipulate that prisoners be placed in jails nearest to their place of residence regardless of where their families live.

The sources went on to reveal that Abu Duma’s family lived in Damanhur in the Baheira Governorate, and that he had already served 20 days of his sentence. They added that Abu Duma would be released at the end of his jail term unless he was found guilty of additional criminal charges.
