Amid a festive atmosphere, around 200,000 citizens celebrated the "Day of Victory" in front of Leader Ibrahim Mosque in Alexandria after Friday prayers a week after President Hosni Mubarak resigned.
People launched fireworks and danced to the tunes of bands that came to celebrate with them. Children wore new clothes and carried the Egyptian flag in their hands. Participants made a monument for the martyrs of Alexandria. Each of the 33 martyrs' families delivered a few words to the crowd.
Families of detainees were seen holding their sons' images and demanding their release. Other participants held signs listing the unmet demands of the revolution, including the dismissal of Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq's government, the formation of an interim government, and the exclusion of any part of the ousted regime from the political arena.
Hundreds of Alexandria university staff joined the celebration. Some took part in prayers for the martyrs and others waved banners where they wrote phrases such as "Egypt is above all", "The martyrs' souls are in heaven", and " Teaching faculty congratulates the Egyptian people on their victory."
