Zawya presents Naguib Mahfouz film program

Zawya is set to present a film program schedule honoring acclaimed Egyptian author Naguib Mahfouz, done in partnership with Diwan Publishing, the Naguib Mahfouz Project and Rizo Masr.

Mahfouz, beyond his role as one of the most world-renowned Arab authors, also had a heavy role in shaping Egyptian cinema through his screenwriting and adaptations of his own work, evolving into some of the most important films in Egypt’s cinematic history.

Zawya will showcase seven classical Egyptian films, five being adaptations of Mahfouz’s novel with the remaining two featuring his work as a screenwriter.

A pioneer of Arab literature

Mahfouz, who died in 2006 at the age of 94, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1988.

The Nobel academy noted in its citation for the prize that Mahfouz, “through works rich in nuance—now clear-sightedly realistic, now evocatively ambiguous—has formed an Arabic narrative art that applies to all mankind.”
