Zahi Hawass, a renowned archaeologist, revealed details about the Egyptian government’s preparations to open the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM).
In a phone-in interview with journalist Faten Abdel-Mugeeb on the ‘Sala al-Tahrir’ program broadcast on Sada El Balad channel, Hawass said, “I thank the President for his interest in the GEM.”
The archaeologist continued, saying that the GEM project is considered the most important cultural project of the 21st century, and its opening ceremony will witness a large turnout from millions of people from all over the world.
Hawass explained that the GEM may be opened during the coming summer, specifically in June or July, calling for the need to set the opening date well in advance of the celebration.
Regarding the formation of the museum’s board of trustees, Hawass affirmed that it was necessary to select some international and foreign figures to be included in the board of trustees of the GEM, as the museum is of interest to foreigners and tourists from all over the world.
The Egyptian Official Gazette published, in its issue #52 (A) on December 30, 2024, Sisi’s ratification of Decree #600 of 2024 to reconstitute the Board of Trustees of the GEM Authority for a period of three years.
