The Ministry of Social Solidarity will rely on revolutionary youth groups to help oversee the distribution of subsidized butane and bread among consumers.
A source at the ministry said the youth committees will verify that the appropriate amount of flour is produced, and will also work on combating the black market trade. In addition, they will oversee the distribution of butane cylinders and prevent thugs from selling them at inflated rates.
The declaration followed a meeting between Minister of Social Solidarity Gouda Abdel Khaleq and a group of revolutionary youth activists, during which he asked the youths to form popular committees for those purposes.
On Sunday, the director of the ministry's control and distribution department, Fathy Abdel Aziz, convened with representatives of the 25 January Revolution Youth Coalition to coordinate efforts and answer queries. The attendants agreed that the committees would not be limited to Greater Cairo, and would instead be formed in all provinces.
Abdel Aziz revealed that more than 200 violations relating to subsidized goods are reported on a daily basis. The violations include the selling of gas cylinders for inflated prices and small factories using the cylinders to run their own business activities.
Ministry data say that the number of filling stations for butane cylinders stands at 54. Eighty percent are owned by the private sector, while the rest are owned by the state. Around 2800 repositories distribute 26 million cylinders per month, according to the data.
