Youth coalition withdraws rejection of cabinet nominees

The 25 January Revolution Youth Coalition on Wednesday retracted its calls for the removal of Prime Minister Essam Sharaf and his cabinet nominees.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the coalition said it will give Sharaf's new cabinet a chance and added that the decision was prompted by a desire to "place national interest above all considerations" and to bolster national consensus.

Still, the coalition insisted on the importance of ridding all ministries of corrupt figures following indications that some Mubarak regime officials will remain at the helm of their ministries.

The coalition urged Sharaf's cabinet to announce a clear, detailed timeframe for purging all ministries of corrupt officials and a firm, transparent "cleansing" process.

The coalition further urged Sharaf to clarify the powers of the cabinet as opposed to those of the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.

The coalition is also still insisting that Attorney General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud resign from his position for what the group called his poor performance as a representative of the people.

The coalition also proposed its own list of nominees for ministerial positions.

Sharaf on Sunday announced the names of the nominees for his proposed cabinet, but the swearing-in has been postponed twice as Sharaf continues consultations regarding the shake-up.
