Yemeni president reportedly in stable condition after eye surgery

Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh underwent eye surgery on Sunday night to remove a piece of shrapnel, but his health is stable, a medical source at the military hospital he is staying at in Riyadh said.

The source, who requested anonymity, said Saleh is fed through a nasal tube and suffers from second-degree burns to 40 percent of his body.

Doctors removed a piece of shrapnel from Saleh's eye after two operations, the most recent of which was on Sunday night, the source said. A second piece of shrapnel is still lodged in his leg.

Another source at the same hospital said Saleh intends to hold a press conference in Riyadh immediately following his recovery, but gave no further details about a date of his release or whether he intends to return to Yemen.

The sources denied earlier reports by Yemeni diplomatic sources in Italy of Saleh’s death and their accusation that Riyadh was deliberately hiding the news.
