Kamel al-Waziry, chief of staff of of the Armed Forces’ Engineering Authority and supervisor of the new Suez Canal project, explained on Wednesday the circumstances of the death of a worker, the first fatality of the project.
He said on the sidelines of the visit of the Arab Organization for Industrialization that the worker slipped while he was filling his Bulldozer with gas and fell on his head.
“He was immediately taken to the hospital but died later,” he said, adding that prosecutors confirmed the circumstances of the death.
“We have disbursed an appropriate compensation to his family through the free insurance policy that all workers sign,” he said. “Add to it donations collected from all companies working on the project and from the armed forces.”
“Fifty-nine companies gave donations,” he said, adding that they are buying savings certificates with them for his wife and three children.
The worker was contracted only for one day. “He died on his first and last day of work,” he said.
