Mervat al-Tellawy, head of the National Council for Women (NCW), announced the formation of a watchdog committee to monitor women's rights during the transitional period.
The committee will also prepare a document regarding the demands of women after reviewing all Egyptian legislation issued since 1929 to identify areas of weakness with regards to women's rights.
At a press conference held on Thursday, Tellawy called for dissolving religious parties and reiterated her rejection to the idea of amending the constitution rather than writing a new one.
"There is a need for a new constitution that has a vision and goal represented in the establishment of a modern civil democratic state based on equality between citizens and respect of the individual and his or her freedom."
She said the suspended 2012 constitution had not achieved anything for women, and had even excluded any reference to international treaties. She called on the Interior Ministry and the Armed Forces to fend off any attacks on the dignity of women and Egyptian families in the Rabaa al-Adaweya sit-in.
"What is happening in Rabaa al-Adaweya undermines social security and peace and represents an assault on state prestige."
