African woman killed trying to cross into Israel

An unnamed African woman was killed while trying to cross into Israel through the Egyptian border Wednesday, state-run news agency MENA reported.

The woman died while trying to cross the border to Israel near the Karam Salem exit, south of the Rafah border crossing, MENA said. Authorities transferred her body to the Rafah central hospital, and found no identification documents with her.

Egyptian and Palestinian news outlets reported that Egyptian security shot the women after firing warning shots and verbally warning her not to cross the razor wire on the borders.

African immigrants usually arrive at the heavily fortified border hoping to cross into Israel for the jobs and better life they feel awaits them there. Smugglers, often Bedouin, run a trade in getting the Africans over the border in return for money.

International organizations have accused Egyptian security of excessive use of force against the African migrants, but Egypt defends it, considering it a national security measure.
