Former Egyptian Minister of Communications, Hany Mahmoud, stated that discussing a price increase for mobile phone services requires the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology to conduct a study to determine the reasons for the cost and its actual extent, in order to make an appropriate decision.
Mahmoud explained that several factors influence raising the cost of telecommunications services, including increased fuel prices, due to their impact on transmission and operation between communication stations.
This is in addition to salary increases following the rise in gasoline prices.
The former minister added on Thursday that the US dollar exchange rate in banks is also a significant factor, especially since a large percentage of production inputs are imported.
Therefore, any increase in the dollar exchange rate is directly reflected in the cost of telecommunications services.
Some mobile phone service operators are contemplating raising their prices in the coming period, given the continued rise in fuel prices and the decline in the value of the Egyptian pound against the US dollar.
The Automatic Fuel Pricing Committee on Tuesday raised the prices of various types of gasoline and diesel by approximately three Egyptian pounds per liter, marking the first increase since the beginning of 2026.
