The National Council for Women (NCW), in cooperation with Cairo Governorate, organized “Protect Her from FGM” conference on Tuesday to coordinate efforts to raise awareness of female genital mutilation (FGM), and support the council’s efforts to work on defending women’s rights and family issues.
The deputy rapporteur of the NCW in Cairo, Umm Kulthum Shalash, stressed that what is required now is to unify efforts and join forces in order to reach a year free of FGM in 2022.
Cairo Governor Khaled Abdel-Aal said that the “No to FGM” campaign is borne out of respect for humanity and combating ignorance and false beliefs that cause Egyptian women to suffer.
The rapporteur of NCW in Cairo Maha Marwan, explained that the initiative launched by the National Committee for the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation comes in support of Egypt’s efforts to confront physical violence against Egyptian women and support of their rights.
Marwan called on everyone to work together with all partners involved in the issue, to take advantage of all the services available, and to work on developing an integrate plan of activities with specific roles and contributions throughout June 2021 to June 2022.
