“We have inherited carcinogenic wheat from the regime that we’re still trying to topple,” Minister of Supply and Social Affairs Gouda Abdel Khaleq told Parliament on Sunday in reply to interpellations on the bread crisis in Egypt. “The Egyptian agricultural system is chaotic.”
Abdel Khaleq also said food security in Egypt is threatened by foreign manipulation, as subsidized bread contains 60 percent imported wheat, 30 percent local wheat and 10 percent white corn. “We need Parliament to help us fix this problem,” he said. “We can also cooperate with Sudan in this regard.”
“The government mulls buying bread from producers and distributing it directly to consumers so as the make sure the subsidized bread goes to those who need it most,” the minister said.
