Wastewater spills into the Nile as barrier collapses in Aswan

An environmental disaster took place in the Camp area one kilometer southwest of the city of Aswan as a mud barrier of a sewage treatment tank collapsed, discharging large quantities of wastewater into the Nile between the High Dam and the Aswan Reservoir.

The strong flow of the half-meter high water broke a 15-meter-long asphalt layer and blocked the road to the ferries that transport the residents to the islands behind the reservoir.

Officials of the sanitation company are at the site trying to contain the leak.
