Washington has increased the number of U.S. intelligence staff in Ankara, as the U.S. performs an adjustment at the intelligence office due to ongoing unrest in Syria, Iraq and Egypt.
Staff at the embassy’s defense cooperation office in the Turkish capital increased from 40 to 52 U.S. soldiers and Turkish officers.
The Turkish Vatan newspaper reported on Monday that intelligence workers photograph areas of northern Iraq using drone aircraft, adding that 40 intelligence staff were working in the office until 26 February.
The intelligence office was opened in the U.S. embassy in Ankara in 1947. It works in collaboration with the Turkish armed forces and is reportedly linked with Turkish intelligence.
