Wasat Party calls for holding poll on time to avoid lawlessness

The parliamentary election should be held at its scheduled date to put an end to political instability, the Wasat Party has said.

Essam Sultan, vice president of the Wasat Party, said all political powers have agreed that unstable security conditions necessitate that elections be held on time.

The three-phase vote for the lower house of Egypt's parliament starts on 28 November.

At an electoral conference in Damietta, Sultan said putting off the vote would lead to a deterioration of security and the exacerbation of political and economic issues.

Wasat was founded by former members of the Muslim Brotherhood. Shortly after the fall of former President Hosni Mubarak, a Cairo court approved the establishment of the party, which had been trying to secure an official license for 15 years.

The party is fielding 322 candidates in the list-based system and 70 candidates in the single-winner one. Two Copts and 69 women are among the candidates.

Sultan added that Egypt cannot function without elected institutions running the country’s affairs, and added there is also a need to expedite the drafting of a new constitution, in order to determine the country’s political identity.
