Wafd Party members expelled for defying party’s poll boycott

The liberal opposition Wafd Party will expel all candidates who did not abide by the party’s decision to withdraw from Sunday’s parliamentary election run-offs. The party’s executive board unanimously made the decision on Wednesday.

It notified the Speaker of Parliament and sent him a letter listing the names of expelled candidates. The party’s internal ‘Wafdists Against Rigging’ movement, formed on Wednesday, supported the decision.

The movement announced its plan to hold a symbolic funeral at the new parliament’s first session on Monday and place a coffin, upon which it will write “Today marks the death of Democracy,” before the mausoleum of the late Egyptian leader Saad Zaghloul.
