The three Wafd Party MPs who refused to carry out party orders to boycott the recently concluded parliamentary elections objected to the party’s legal committee recommendation to drop their memberships.
“This recommendation is illegal because the committee did not investigate us,” said MP Tarek Sabbaq. “Running in the elections was a general assembly decision, whereas boycotting the runoffs was a political decision.”
“How can I let down those who voted for me and step out of parliament,” Sabbaq added.
MP Mohamed al-Malky agreed with Sabbaq. “The committee should have notified us officially 15 days in advance,” he said.
“Party Vice President Fouad Badrawy requested us to resign without investigation,” said MP Atef al-Ashmony. “We proposed suspending our membership until the end of this parliamentary session, but he refused.”
“The party did not ask its Shura Council members to step out,” he added. “I call this a double standard.”
