“Human rights and civil society organizations that claim that parliamentary elections were rigged were simply voicing their own political opinions,” parliament speaker and ruling National Democratic Party veteran Fathy Sorour said on Thursday.
“These claims are not legally binding and shall therefore not be considered," he said, noting that the government-run High Elections Commission had "found no evidence whatsoever of electoral fraud."
When asked whether President Hosni Mubarak would dissolve the incoming parliament in light of widespread reports of vote-rigging during recently concluded polls, Sorour said simply that he was unable to speak on behalf of the president.
