Violence erupts in Tahrir as security forces clash with vendors

Violence erupted briefly in Tahrir Square on Thursday night after security forces responded to an argument between street vendors near the entrance to Talat Harb Street.

When security forces arrived carrying riot shields, the violence escalated, with civilians throwing stones, and the security forces throwing the stones back, then charging with shields and batons.

Towards the end of the clashes, gunfire was heard and at least one person was carried away injured. By around 10pm, the incident was over, and the area appeared calm once more.

Adel Wassily, an eyewitness in the square, said: "It started as a fight between vendors, and then there was a rumor that the military was coming, so things escalated. Some shops were damaged, including the door of a tourism company."

The security forces involved appeard to be a mix of plain-clothes officers and troops in uniform, with one wearing the uniform of the Central Security Forces and another wearing a military jacket.

Towards the end of the incident, the security forces appeared to have pushed some of the civilians involved in the fighting back towards Talat Harb Square, away from Tahrir.
