Verdict postponed on legal challenge to Mubarak step down

The supreme administrative court on Tuesday postponed the announcement of its verdict in a case seeking to invalidate former President Hosni Mubarak’s decision to step down from office, alleging that the ruling military council acted unconstitutionally in managing his removal.

Judicial sources said the court would announce its verdict on 11 September.

Lawyers supporting the former president have claimed that the 1971 constitution stipulates that a presidential decision to leave office must be offered in a referendum for the people to vote on, which means that Mubarak’s decision to abdicate violated the constitution at the time.

Eyewitnesses said the Tuesday session witnessed clashes between Mubarak supporters and the families of those killed during the revolution, which prompted the court to adjourn.
