Verdict to be issued against teacher who cut students’ hair on 6 November

A Luxor court on Tuesday set 6 November to issue a verdict against a primary school teacher in Upper Egypt accused of cutting the hair of two female pupils as punishment for not wearing hijab.

The court‘s surrounding streets witnessed tight security measures during the trial, although the teacher herself was not present. The teacher's family members attended the session.

The Luxor prosecution referred Embu Bakr Ahmed, a teacher at Al-Haddadeen School in Luxor, to trial after the National Council for Motherhood and Childhood filed a claim against her.

The council accused the teacher of mistreating pupils and using violence against them in violation of the Child's Law No. 126/2008.

Ahmed told Al-Masry Al-Youm on 17 October that she had no political affiliations and she did not expect a reaction to what she did.

The Luxor Education Department took disciplinary action against Ahmed following the incident, referring her to the legal affairs office, depriving her of a month’s payment, and transferring her to another school.
