The Egyptian Ministry of International Cooperation announced on Thursday that it had come to an agreement with the US Agency for International Development (USAID) to assist in the development of Egypt's agricultural sector, with a focus on raising the country's daily production of tomatoes to 4000 tons.
The aid program will provide technical assistance to small land owners with the aim of assisting in the production and import of high-quality crops such as tomatoes, Minister of International Cooperation Fayza Abul Naga said in a press statement. The program will also focus on facilitating purchase agreements between farmers and international agricultural companies.
Abul Naga also pointed out that the USAID-funded Agricultural Exports and Rural Income Program–signed by the US and Egypt in 2002–aimed to raise the overall competitive capacity of Egypt's agricultural sector.
