US think-tank to hold seminar on democracy in Egypt

A Washington DC-based think-tank has scheduled a luncheon panel on the future of democracy in Egypt in light of the death of several civilians marking the fourth anniversary of the 2011 uprising on Sunday.

The Center for the Study of Islam and Democracy has set 27 January for the panel to be hosted from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm at the National Press Club.

“The latest killings of peaceful protesters in Cairo like Shaimaa al-Sabbagh underscore the gloomy picture painted in recent human rights reports,” the center said, revealing that several former MPs and opposition figures were visiting the United States to discuss with policy-makers and academia the “Path Forward for Restoring Democracy in Egypt.”

Panel speakers will include Tharwat Nafei, whom the center identified as the “speaker of the Egyptian parliament in exile” and an independent liberal politician, in addition to Gamal Heshmat, a senior Muslim Brotherhood leader, and Abdel Mawgood Dardiry, a former MP of the Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party.
