US State Department: We do not respond to statements of Egyptian presidential candidates

US State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland has said the department does not respond to personal statements made by Egyptian presidential candidates, especially with the approach of the elections in May.

She added that Washington hopes that the elections would be free, fair and transparent, and that the elected abide by the democratic standards and the human rights principles that have allowed them to run in the elections.

Nuland’s comments came in response to a statement from Amr Moussa, the former secretary general of the Arab League, about the Camp David Accords having been “dead” and “buried” because it called for the establishment of a Palestinian state, which did not materialize.

Moussa also separated Camp David from the peace treaty that was signed between Egypt and Israel.

Nuland said she did not hear Moussa’s statements, and therefore cannot respond to them.
