The US Embassy in Cairo urged its citizens in Egypt to avoid areas expected to witness demonstrations by political groups on the second anniversary of the 25 January uprising.
The embassy said on its website that it had learned massive protests are planned in Cairo’s Tahrir Square and surrounding areas Friday to demand justice for the suspects behind the 2012 Port Said Stadium massacre.
The Port Said Criminal Court is scheduled Saturday to announce its verdicts for 73 defendants accused of killing 72 football fans in February 2012 following a local league match in Port Said.
Various political opposition groups have also called for demonstrations against the ruling Muslim Brotherhood.
The embassy statement said four separate demonstrations may occur in Alexandria this weekend.
The April 6 Youth Movement plans to gather after noon prayers Friday in front of Al-Qaed Ibrahim Mosque to protest the Muslim Brotherhood. Also on Friday, Islamic groups may gather in front of the French Consulate in Alexandria to protest French military operations in Mali, according to the statement.
Liberal groups in the coastal city plan to protest outside Manshiya Criminal Court Saturday to demand justice for defendants accused of killing protesters during the 25 January revolution. Clashes between security forces and protesters have ensued for the past two days outside the court.
The embassy urged US citizens to “avoid areas where large gatherings may occur,” warning, “Even demonstrations or events intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence.”
The statement, however, said, “There is no indication that demonstrations will express anti-American sentiment or be directed at US diplomatic facilities this weekend.”
