The U.S. Embassy in Cairo advised American nationals on Friday to avoid public squares and stay alert at all times in Egypt.
The embassy published on its website a message warning U.S. citizens residing in Egypt about the possibility of unrest over the weekend.
"Representatives of the Muslim Brotherhood [MB] directed to assemble in public squares throughout the country, likely beginning after mid-day prayers. While there is no indication that the demonstrations will not be peaceful, violent clashes could occur."
The statement also warned about the possibility of violence on the anniversary of the Mohamed Mahmoud clashes in downtown Cairo on Tuesday. Egypt also hosts a World Cup qualifying match on the same day. "There is some suggestion that protesters, [including] the Muslim Brotherhood and youth groups, may also attempt to establish a continuous presence in public squares leading up to Tuesday," the statement read.
The embassy urged American nationals in Egypt to monitor the State Department’s website and to plan activities accordingly .
