US defense intelligence chief arrives in Cairo

The director of the US Defense Intelligence Agency, Lieutenant General Ronald Burgess, arrived in Cairo from Bahrain on Tuesday on a two-day visit to Egypt, according to Al-Masry Al-Youm.

This is his second visit to Egypt since the breakout of the 25 January revolution. Burgess was received by US embassy employees.

During his visit, Burgess is scheduled to hold talks with several Egyptian officials to discuss developments in the region, particularly in Syria, and to examine ways to bolster bilateral relations between Egypt and the US.

Burgess’s visit comes after a controversial decision to lift a travel ban imposed on American NGO workers, all but one of whom left from Cairo airport on Thursday after posting bail, sparking outrage in Egypt. The NGO workers were accused of operating in Egypt without licenses and illegally receiving foreign funds.
