The US aircraft carrier the USS Harry Truman and eight other warships crossed the Suez Canal amid tight security measures as part of the North Convoy traveling to the Arabian Gulf through the Red Sea, said informed sources on Monday.
The USS Harry Truman CVN – 75 was accompanied by eight other warships en route to the Arabian Gulf, to join the French fleet's fight against the Islamic State in Syria.
Ferries and fishing boats were not allowed to move in the water until the military ships had passed. Security measures were also tightened along the waterway and a number of locomotives affiliated to the Suez Canal Authority surrounded the warships until it left the waterway of the Suez Canal.
The French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle had crossed the Suez Canal last week, accompanied by five Belgian and Spanish warships on their way to the Arabian Gulf to join in airstrikes against the Islamic State.
