Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak today vowed to go after the perpetrators of the Alexandria church bombing that killed 21 and injured dozens on New Year’s Eve.
In a speech following the attack, Mubarak said Egypt will track down the perpetrators, who will not “escape punishment from Egyptians,” implying the guilty are foreigners.
Mubarak referred to the "origins of the perpetrators" and pledged to pursue them, in a possible reference to states sponsoring terrorism in the region.
Mubarak said that all Egyptians are in the same boat and stand united against terrorism. “Egypt, with its Muslims and Copts, is the target of this attack.”
The president further said that terror groups that Egypt has successfully defeated in the past will not manage to destabilize the country now.
“This terrorist act has shaken the nation. It has shocked and broken the hearts of Egyptians, Muslims and Copts, both of whose blood has been spilled at the scene in Alexandria,” he went on. “This shows that all of Egypt is targeted and that terrorism is blind and does not differentiate between Copts and Muslims.”
