Update: Five dead after Shubra clashes

The Health Ministry on Sunday said victims of the clashes that took place on Saturday in the densely populated district of Shubra al-Kheima north of Cairo are five dead and 12 wounded.

The ministry said in a statement that two corpses have been delivered to their families.

Victims have been transported to governorate hospitals, Health Ministry official in Qalyubiya Governorate Zakaria Abdel Rabbu said, adding that the number is expected to rise after taking into consideration the cases that were taken to Cairo hospitals.

Protesters gathered at the station to protest police killings. Protesters told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the police were chasing a suspected criminal and starting shooting randomly to scare the suspect. However, one of the bullets killed a bystander on a balcony.

Policemen fired tear gas canisters and also fired shots in the air to disperse dozens of protesters who gathered around an East Shubra al-Kheima district building and broke in, seizing motorcycles and three-wheeled vehicles from the garage.

Two policeman was injured while trying to prevent protesters from storming the police station, while another recruit was shot during the clashes.

Central Security Forces have surrounded the police station to prevent further attempts at storming it.
