UPDATE: 16 dead in 30-vehicle pileup on Giza-Beni Suef road

Sixteen people died on Sunday when 30 vehicles, including private cars, trucks and micro-buses collided on al-Koraimat road between Giza and Beni Suef.
 
Twenty-two people were wounded in the incident and 30 ambulances arrived on scene to take them to hospitals in Beni Suef.
 
The accident caused traffic on the road to stop for three hours.
 
Egypt has one of the world’s highest rates of traffic accidents.
 
In December, the government’s Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics said the number of car accidents during the first half of 2015 rose by 3.5 percent for a total of 6,916 accidents, compared with 6,685 accidents during the same period in 2014.The number of deaths, however, decreased by 2.7 percent, from 3,025 to 2,808 deaths in the first half of 2015, it clarified.
