Unprecedented revenues: Saudi tourists spent LE75 billion in Egypt in 2024

Egypt’s tourism sector has achieved record-breaking revenues in the past eleven months, exceeding $14 billion, a 7.8 percent increase, the highest on record, the Mubasher Pulse website reported.

Saudi tourists alone spent approximately $1.5 billion, equivalent to more than 75 billion Egyptian pounds.

This success was driven by an increase in the number of tourists to 14.3 million, a growth of 3.97 percent, and a rise in tourist nights to 151.3 million, a 7.8 percent increase.

Tourism sector experts anticipate continued revenue growth in the coming year if the geopolitical situation in the region stabilizes.

Sameh Saad, former advisor to the Egyptian Minister of Tourism, noted that the sector has recorded positive growth rates for the second consecutive year in 2024, in terms of both the number of incoming tourists and tourist nights, leading to increased revenues.

Germany, England, Russia, and Saudi Arabia topped the list of the most visiting nationalities to Egypt, with Saudi tourists recording high growth rates, according to CNN.

Mohamed Tharwat, head of the Arab Tourism Committee at the Chamber of Tourism Companies, noted that inbound tourism from Arab countries in 2024 surpassed the previous year, with Gulf countries, particularly Saudi Arabia, leading as the most frequent visitors to Egypt, according to the Egyptian newspaper Al Watan.

Nader Ayad, a board member of the Chamber of Tourism Companies, emphasized the exceptional relationship between Egypt and Saudi Arabia in the field of tourism, pointing to the significant tourism movement between the two countries.

The number of Egyptian Umrah pilgrims who visited Saudi Arabia last season reached approximately 750,000, in addition to half a million Egyptian visitors. Saudis account for half of all Arab tourists visiting Egypt annually, with around 1.5 million tourists, according to the Egyptian newspaper Al Youm Al Sabaa.

According to an official statement, the Egyptian economy grew by 3.5 percent in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2024/2025, and the tourism sector was one of the fastest-growing economic activities, with a growth rate of 8.2 percent.
