The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugee estimated on Sunday that more than 40,000 Syrians have fled to Egypt.
UNHCR said in a statement that only a thousand Syrians had registered with the organization by June, but those seeking registration had increased since it started communicating with Syrian refugees and their representatives.
According to the statement, 3,767 Syrians were registered by the beginning of October.
The statement said that the commission expects that the number of registered Syrians in Egypt to reach about 12,000 people by the end of the year, if registration continued to go with its current rate.
Most registered Syrians in Egypt come from Homs, the statement said, although large numbers also come from Aleppo and Tartous. It said more families from Damascus have come to Egypt as a result of the escalation in the capital and its suburbs.
From mid-October, All Saints Cathedral in Zamalek will be the headquarters for registering Syrians. Registrations are expected to be some 120 refugees a day.
According to commission data, approximately 294,000 Syrians have been displaced from Syria.
The opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says that violence has claimed the lives of about 29,000 people.
