UN organizes Nile celebration to raise awareness on sustainable development

The United Nations organized a celebration on the Nile under the slogan Sailing the Nile for Sustainable Development Saturday evening, in Cairo, to raise awareness for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that have been adopted by 193 member states of the United Nations in New York during the 70th session of the UN General Assembly last September.

The celebration included the sailing of five sailboats on the Nile and aimed to raise awareness of the UN's latest plan, The Road to Dignity 2030.

The celebration was organized by the UN Information Center in Cairo, the Arab League and the Foreign Ministry.

The sailboats, which were located by the Sawy Culture Wheel, raised flags with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on them, including eradicating poverty, fighting inequality and injustice and tackling climate change by 2030, according to the UN official website.

Egypt's plan for 2030 is harmonious with the goals of sustainable development, said Anita Neroda, Resident Representative of the United Nations in Egypt during the celebration.

Haifa Abu Ghazala, Assistant Secretary General of the Arab League, stressed the importance of dialogue with young people to define the goals of sustainable development and spread awareness of the campaign through social networking websites.

The sustainable development plan aims as well to complete the unaccomplished goals of the UN development plan set between 2000 and 2015.
