UN Arab Group seeks Security Council resolution on Israeli settlements

The Arab Group at the United Nations is seeking to have the UN Security Council issue a resolution indicting Israel's continuing construction of settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Egypt's permanent delegate to the UN, Maged Abdel Fattah, said on Wednesday that the Arab Group took its decision after the US failed to halt the construction of Israeli settlements.

In statements to Egyptian Radio, Abdel Fattah said that all members of the Security Council support the Arab stance with the exception of the US, which believes the problem of settlements should be addressed through negotiations.

Abdel Fattah urged the US to abstain from voting and to refrain from using its veto.

The draft resolution, put together by the Palestinian Authority, urges the Security Council to incriminate settlement building and impose a total ban on their construction.

The Arab Group consists of Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Qatar, Syria, Palestine and Saudi Arabia.
