UMS fires Ahmed Shobeir after linking footballer Ahmed Refaat’s death to doping

The Board of Directors of the United Media Services (UMS) Company decided unanimously on Thursday that the program presented by media personality Ahmed Shobeir to be suspended, and to terminate the contract with him immediately.

The company said in a statement: “Violating the company’s professional rules and content policies is unacceptable. United Media Services places respect for Egyptian public opinion at the forefront of its priorities.”

The Board of Directors of UMS has affirmed that the chaos in the sports media sector necessitates a decisive confrontation in order to safeguard the Egyptian citizen’s right to sports media that respects truth and adheres to honesty.

UMS emphasized its keenness to ensure that its cadres provide professional media that respects the viewer, and that it will not hesitate to deter anyone who deviates from the professional standards that it has adhered to since its inception.

UMS’s decision came against the backdrop of the association of Ahmed Shobeir’s name with the crisis of the late player Ahmed Refaat, who passed away last Saturday after his health deteriorated.

Social media users circulated a previous video of Shobeir during the health crisis experienced by Refaat and his fall on the field during his team Future “Modern Sport’s” match with Alexandria Union.

The video showed that Shobeir tried to link Refaat’s sudden fall to the use of stimulants, which sparked a wave of anger among Egyptian fans who demanded an investigation into Shobeir, the Pulse Mubasher website reported on Thursday.

Shobeir’s connection to Refaat’s crisis did not stop at this point, but rather, due to his position as Vice President of Future Club during the player’s crisis, a large segment of the fans believe that the media personality bears part of the responsibility for what happened to the player.
