HMS Somerset, one of the UK’s 13 type 23 frigates that are the mainstay of the country’s surface fleet, passed Wednesday through Egypt’s Suez Canal, heading to the Mediterranean.
The passing process was marked with tight security measures for the warship, which can carry nearly 10,000 tons.
The warship is expected to arrive at the Maltese Grand Harbour before returning to the UK, Times of Malta reported on Wednesday.
HMS Somerset sailed from the UK last August, spending six-month tour of duty conducting maritime security operations that included cracking down on piracy, smuggling, terrorism, human trafficking and the illegal arms trade.
