The Chairman of the Communications and Information Technology Committee at the Egyptian House of Representatives, MP Ahmed Badawy, announced that major measures have been taken with ride-sharing app companies such as Uber and Careem, following the death of Habiba al-Shamaa.
Uber and Careem have announced that passengers can now call for help during the trip through the new distress button, or requesting help within the application with an SOS button.
Interventions will be carried out quickly through the ride-sharing company’s system.
Badawy confirmed that there will be continuous inspection on drivers regarding their criminal record to properly verify their identities and ensure the safety of passengers.
He also indicated that this matter aims to achieve the highest levels of safety, and that in addition a program will be added to monitor the entire trip.
Shamaa, 23, passed away on March 14 after falling into a coma that lasted for 21 days, which resulted from her jumping out of an Uber car when the driver had attempted to kidnap her.
