Two more oil spills in Daqahliya

The Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA) in the delta governorate Dakahliya have received reports about two oil spills near Mansoura on Friday.

Authorities are aware of the spills, according to EEAA director in Daqahliya Abu Bakr al-Shahawi. Al-Shahawi said the spills covered areas of 20 meters sq. and 15 meters sq. respectively. EEAA officials have placed hay around the affected areas and are in the process of removing the oil.

Authorities are trying to identify the source of the spills through oil fingerprinting. Legal action will be take against the perpetrators, officials said.

Daqahliya Governor Samir Sallam said the spills are far from water treatment plants. Authorities are securing the facilities regardless, according to Sallam, who added that water samples from the vicinity of the plants showed no signs of contamination.

In recent months, Egypt has suffered from a number of oil spills in the Nile and delta region.
