Two men sentenced to 5 years over Syria’s Nusra Front affiliation

The Mansoura Criminal Court in Daqahlia sentenced on Thursday two men to five years' imprisonment and acquitted a third one, over charges of joining al-Nusra Front, one of the most active militant groups fighting government forces in Syria.

The two convicted defendants were arrested at a United Arab Emirates airport and Cairo International Airport. The acquitted defendant was arrested at Cairo airport, while he was on his way to Turkey.

Al-Nusra Front, listed by the United States as a terrorist organization, was formed in 2011 by al-Qaeda leader in Iraq and the current commander of the Islamic State, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

US President Barack Obama said recent bloody attacks claimed by the IS in Kuwait, Egypt and Tunisia were evidence that the group succeeded in recruiting several operatives in many countries.

Recent news reports have shed light on collaboration between Al-Nusra Front and IS.
