Two people were killed and 12 others were injured in traffic accident between a bus and microbus on the Suez-Sokhna Road at Suez governorate on Saturday, Egypt’s Health Ministry said.
Health Ministry spokesperson Khaled Megahid said that 10 ambulances rushed to the scene and transferred the victims to the Health Insurance Hospital in Suez and Suez General Hospital.
Megahid explained that the injuries range from concussions and fractures in the pelvis and leg to bruises and abrasions across the body, stressing that all the injured are currently receiving the proper treatment and care.
He said that Health Minister Hala Zayed gave ordered that all the necessary medical treatments be given, and that all of them are in stable condition.
Egypt loses about 12,000 lives to traffic accidents every year. It has a road traffic fatality rate of 42 deaths per 100,000 population, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The majority (48 percent) of those killed are passengers of four-wheelers though pedestrians also constitute a significant proportion (20 percent) of these fatalities.
According to a Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) report on 2017 accidents, car accidents on roads resulted in 3,747 deaths, 13,998 injuries, and 17,201 damaged vehicles.
The report added that the main cause of accidents was the human factor, with 78.9 percent of the total causes, followed by defects in the vehicle with 14 percent, and then environmental causes and the road condition with 2 percent of the total accidents.
