TV host Wael al-Ibrashy called on President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to make 14 August, which marks the dispersal of Rabaa al-Adaweya and Nahda sit-ins, a ‘day of celebration.'
In his talk show on Tuesday on Dream 2 TV, Ibrashy said he proposed during Sisi’s meeting with media professionals on Saturday that he gives a speech on 14 August in celebration of the dispersal of the biggest sit-ins staged by supporters of the toppled President Mohamed Morsy demanding his reinstatement after being toppled in July following mass protests.
“I proposed that we transfer the day into a celebratory event, since this is a day when the country restored its prestige,” he said considering it as a “sit-in of state inside a state. It was an armed sit-in that included killing, torture, suffocation and besiege of citizens.”
“We should have made arrangements for the day and celebrated it,” he said wishing that Sisi responds to the proposal.
More than 800 people were killed during the dispersal of the sit-ins. A Human Rights Watch report, issued on Tuesday, accused Egyptian authorities of committing anti-human crimes against protesters without holding any official accountable for the incidents. However, Egypt rejected the report, described it as biased and defended the way security forces handled the issue.
